HOW TO CHOOSE AN ERGONOMIC CHAIR
Even the best workers cannot perform to their maximum potential without proper gear. Similarly, average performers can boost their output when they use well-designed equipment. To make sure that an ergonomic chair will meet the specific needs of individuals in your work environment, you should choose chairs that meet the criteria in this checklist.
- Is the seat large enough? It should be at least one inch wider than the hips and thighs on either side. For optimal comfort, the seat should have a waterfall front and concave contour to allow the seated worker's weight to be evenly distributed.
- Is the seat pneumatically adjustable? The chair should be easily and quickly adjustable and should be adjusted so the crease at the back of the knee is about level with or no more than 1/2" above or below the hip.
- Is the seat tilt available? If tilt is beneficial in maintaining a balanced posture for the task, you should specify it in your chairs.
- Is the seat cushioned with high-density foam for proper support over time? Low-density foam bottoms out quickly under the physical stresses of continuous use. The results are discomfort and often the addition of pillows, fabric and other items that can cause imbalance and consequent fatigue of the hips, back and shoulders.
- Can the chair be adjusted high enough and/or low enough to meet the needs of all operators? If not, are adapters available? It is important for operators to work at appropriate seat heights. The mechanism to adjust seat height should be easy to reach and operate.
HOW TO CHOOSE A DESK
The most important consideration when choosing a desk is the size of your working area. Maximizing the efficiency of available space is the key to working effectively. You will need 3-1/2 to 4 feet behind your desk, 3-1/2 to 4 feet between a desk and credenza behind it, 3 feet in front of the desk if you are going to put guest seating there, and 3 feet or more on one side of the desk to go around it. You need a room at least 9 by 12 for example, to comfortably put a 36 x 72 desk, two side chairs, and a credenza.
WORK SURFACES
Most commercial duty desks have laminate surfaces. These surfaces come in a variety of finishes and serve most uses very well. Wood edge trim is an economical way of dressing up a laminate desk. Veneer surfaces are more elegant and tend to cost more. They are more susceptible to damage from rough usage, however.
DRAWERS
Drawers in commercial desks are often constructed of plain wood, but may be laminate covered. Drawer suspensions need to operate smoothly and reliably. Three-quarter height pedestals are generally found on less expensive desks than full height pedestals. Locks are generally standard on commercial duty desk pedestals. File drawers should accommodate either legal or letter size file
WIRE MANAGEMENT
Wire management features are important in today's technological workplace. By reducing clutter they enable you to use your surfaces more efficiently.
HOW TO CHOOSE A FILE CABINET
The decision to choose a vertical file or a lateral file depends on what kind of room it's going into. If you have more wall space than floor space, a lateral file is generally your best bet. If wall space is at a premium, but floor space is more readily available, then vertical files would probably meet your needs more effectively.
Lateral files are available in 30, 36 and 42 inch widths. We stock the 36 and 42 inch widths as they are the most frequently used. If you are looking for maximum filing capacity for letter size files, the 42 inch wide files can be configured to three rows of front to back filing by the use of optional FBB brackets. In this scenario two drawers of a lateral file will hold the equivalent of a four drawer vertical file.
All of our files have the following features to assure you of many years of trouble-free, satisfied usage. If you are comparing features, make sure that you are getting at least those listed below.
- Reinforced welded steel corners and sides
- Easily adjusted leveling glides so frames stay square and doors and locks open and close easily
- Solid steel ball-bearing suspensions so heavy, full drawers open and close easily, preventing accidents.
- Central cam-locks for security
- Quality interlock systems that open just one drawer at a time, preventing tipping
- Full-height drawer sides keep work from falling through, and save the extra cost of hanging frames
